Of the 603 cases of criminal offenses1 ， in 2024, 285 were bicycle thefts, accounting for about 18% of all criminal offenses recognized by the Ichihara Police Station.
In addition, a retrospective examination of the number of bicycle thefts shows that there were 260 cases in 2005, 244 cases in 2022, and 212 cases in 2021, and that the number is increasing year by year.
A survey of the 285 cases of bicycles stolen in 2024 showed that 93 bicycles were locked and 192 bicycles were unlocked, indicating that two out of three bicycles stolen were unlocked.
A survey showed that the percentage of bicycles with double locks that were stolen was less than 10% of all bicycles, so double locking bicycles is expected to be effective in preventing theft.
In line with the mandatory wearing of bicycle helmets since April 1, 2023, the Ichihara Police Department has been widely encouraging the wearing of helmets and bicycles under the slogan "Link ！ Two Locks" in order to prevent the increase of thefts from vehicles and to deter bicycle thefts and thefts from vehicles.
